Frequently Asked Questions

Will I get beaten up on my first day?

Absolutely not! We have a strict 'No ego' policy. On your first day, you'll be paired with experienced students or coaches who are there to help you move, not 'win.' We were all the new person once, and we protect our beginners like family.

What should I wear to a Gi class?

If it’s your first Gi class, we can provide you with a Gi to borrow (it will be clean, don’t worry!). Under this Gi you can wear a clean tee shirt and athletic shorts without pockets or zips.

Should I get fit before I join?

This is the biggest myth in martial arts. You don't get fit to do grappling; you do grappling to get fit. If you need to sit out a round or take a breather, just walk to the edge of the mat. No one is going to shout at you.

Are there any secret rules?

Nothing scary. The big ones are: No shoes on the mat (ever). No bare feet off the mat (always wear flip-flops to the loo!). Shake hands/fist bump before you start a round. If you feel uncomfortable, just tap.

I'm a woman. Will I feel welcome?

Yes. You will be safe and very welcome. While the majority of participation is male, grappling is open to everyone. We are advocates of women in grappling and have female members and an incredible female coach.

What should I wear to a No-Gi class?

No fancy gear needed to start. Just wear a clean T-shirt (ideally a tighter-fitting one) and some athletic shorts or leggings without pockets or zips (zips can scratch the mats or your partners). Avoid baggy hoodies or anything with loose strings.

Is there any specific BOMCG uniform?

No. Clubs who make you wear specific club clothing are trying to take your money. Wear whatever you want as long as it’s clean and safe. If you decide you want to rep BOMCG, we have the coolest merch available.

What about hygiene?

Hygiene is our obsession. Our mats are deep-cleaned daily with medical-grade disinfectant. All we ask is that you come with clean training gear, trimmed nails, and shoes on whenever you’re off the mat.

Is it safe?

Yes, we take every precaution to make your experience on our mats as safe as possible. Like any contact sport, a risk of injury exists. Bruises and sore muscles are normal, significant injury is very rare.

Do I need a long-term contract?

No. We don't need to lock you into a long contract. We offer flexible memberships because life happens. You can quit and rejoin at any time.

SAFEGUARDING

Grappling is a sport built on mutual respect. We are committed to ensuring that every person who steps onto our mats, regardless of age, gender, ability, or background, feels safe and protected from harm. Our Welfare Officer is your first point of contact for any concerns.
