OUR ROOTS
BOMGC grew out of Birmingham Open Mat (BOM), a grassroots grappling community founded in 2024. BOM broke down the traditional barriers between clubs, providing a space for passionate grapplers, hobbyists and outsiders to train together with no boundaries.
Â
The community quickly grew. Word spread, and grapplers from across the UK and beyond visited BOM, sharing techniques, sparring, and building friendships based on a mutual love of grappling and jiu jitsu. BOM was special because it was for everyone. It didn’t matter if you were gi, or no-gi. It didn’t matter if you were a competitor looking to prepare, a hobbyist wanting a bit more live rolling, or a total beginner taking their first steps into the sport - everyone found a space on the BOM mat. Members included people of all ages and backgrounds, abilities, and styles.
Â
BOM quickly outgrew the hired dojo space in Kings Heath, Birmingham, and as it grew, members all asked the same questions; ‘Why is BOM only twice a week? Why can’t we start a club?’ We began asking the same question. BOM had everything we wanted: a tight-knit, inclusive community, experienced grapplers and teachers, and a unique vibe.
Â
So we decided to do it....and Birmingham Open Mat Grappling Club was born. Â

The BOMGC Way
How we teach
How we personalise
Most clubs take the traditional demo-then-drill approach. We prefer to blend tradition with modern sports science and constraints-led learning to help you solve real problems in real-time. We think It's faster, smarter, and more engaging.Â

Ever feel unseen in your current club? Annoying isn't it? We want every person to feel seen and invested in. We make space to listen to your questions and provide personal instruction and feedback. Within a limited class time, it can be challenging to personally coach every person, so our timetable has personal learning baked into it, where you get one-on-one time with coaches to trouble shoot and elevate your skills.
